What "Clips and Fasteners Included" Actually Means

A tropical hardwood decking supplier that includes clip and fastener systems with orders ships four things as one matched package: the boards, the machined groove that accepts the clip, the clips themselves, and the stainless screws, all quantified off the deck plan instead of guessed at the counter. That is the whole offer, and it is narrower than most buyers assume. Plenty of yards will sell decking and also sell a box of clips. The distinction matters on the third day of an install, not the first. A grooved Ipe board with a groove milled at the wrong height rides proud of its neighbor. A clip sized for a 21mm board sits loose in a 1-inch nominal groove. A carbon steel screw in a Cumaru joist bay near salt water starts weeping black within a season. None of those are decking failures. They are procurement failures that arrive looking like decking failures.

The Groove, the Clip, and the Board Are One Specification

A hidden fastener clip is not a universal part; it is a tool cut to a specific groove width, groove depth, and groove height, and the board has to be milled to that geometry before it leaves the mill. Groove geometry belongs to the clip system, and the clip manufacturer's published dimensions govern: in tropical decking that groove commonly runs about 1/4 inch wide and 1/4 to 5/16 inch deep, centered on the edge of a nominal 1 inch board or set slightly high on a 5/4 board. Change the board thickness and the groove centerline moves. Change the clip brand and the tolerance moves with it.

Field grooving with a biscuit joiner or a slot cutter is possible. It is also slow, and on wood at 3,000-plus on the Janka scale it is punishing on cutters. A 200 square foot deck in 5/4x6 Ipe carries roughly 420 linear feet of board, which means about 840 linear feet of edge to slot. Crews that try it once rarely try it twice.

The other half of the problem is dimensional consistency. Clips reference the groove, so groove position controls how flat the deck reads. If board thickness wanders by a sixteenth across a lift, and the groove is cut off the face rather than off a fixed reference, the finished surface telegraphs every variation. Boards milled to a controlled thickness and grooved in the same pass off the same reference face solve that before it ever reaches the site.

Species Density Decides How the Fastener Behaves

The denser the species, the less forgiving the fastener detail, and tropical decking sits at the top of the density range where every screw needs a pilot hole and every clip needs a groove cut by machine. Ipe runs about 3,680 lbf on the Janka scale at roughly 1,050 kg/m3. Drive an unpiloted screw into it and you will snap heads, cam out, or split the board edge. Density also drives movement. Dense tropicals move less than softwoods across the grain, but they move, and the clip has to allow it. Most clip systems set a consistent gap and let the board slide slightly against the clip. Face-screwed boards do not have that freedom, which is why face screws want two per joist and a pre-drilled and countersunk hole rather than one screw fighting the board.

Hidden Fasteners Only Work With the Right Profile

Only a grooved profile takes a hidden fastener; shiplap on an exterior deck or wall takes visible fasteners, and no clip changes that. This is the single most common spec error that lands in the order desk. An architect draws shiplap decking with a hidden-fastener note, the contractor orders shiplap, and the clips arrive with nothing to grip. Shiplap laps over its neighbor, and there is no groove anywhere on it for a clip to grip.

Tongue and groove is the profile that accepts hidden fastening on porch floors, where boards are blind-nailed or blind-screwed through the tongue. Clip systems use their own edge groove, cut for the clip, not a T&G tongue. Those two are not interchangeable, and a T&G board will not accept a deck clip designed for a slot.

Orientation is not optional. Grooves face DOWN. A groove turned up is a trough, and on a T&G porch floor the same rule applies, groove down so water leaves rather than collects. Installed that way, T&G sheds water rather than holding it, while any profile turned upside down will collect it.

Everything sits on structure. Decking goes on joists, cladding and porch flooring go on furring strips, and both need the air behind them to move. The Building Science Corporation rain control digest makes the general case: drainage and drying are assembly properties, not material properties.

Clips or Face Screws, and When Each One Wins

Clips buy a clean surface and cost labor; face screws cost appearance and buy speed, serviceability, and a mechanical connection that does not depend on groove integrity. Both are correct answers to different projects.

Clips make sense on visible residential decks, rooftop amenity spaces, restaurant terraces, anywhere the surface reads as finish work. They also keep the board face free of penetrations, which removes several hundred small face penetrations per hundred square feet where water could sit.

Face screws make sense on boardwalks, docks, municipal work, and anything a maintenance crew will pull apart in five years. Stainless screws with plugs split the difference on high-end work, giving a nearly clean face while keeping a mechanical fastener the crew can back out. Commercial specifiers writing against accessibility criteria should also confirm surface openings and level changes against the ADA Accessibility Standards before committing to a gap width, since clip systems fix that gap for the whole deck.

A mixed approach is normal. Field boards on clips, perimeter and stair treads face screwed, since the clip has nothing to grab where a board meets a rim or dies into a curb. Any package that pretends a job is 100 percent clip is a package that will be short of screws on day four.

Fastener Alloy Is Part of the Order, Not an Afterthought

Tropical hardwood extractives are chemically aggressive toward carbon steel, and coastal salt air finishes the job, so stainless is the baseline and 316 stainless is the coastal requirement. The tannins and extractives that make Ipe and Cumaru rot resistant also corrode plain steel and stain the wood black around every fastener. Hot dipped galvanized buys some time but does not solve the problem on a dense tropical.

Type 305 stainless handles inland residential work. Type 316 adds molybdenum and holds up in salt spray zones, pool decks with chlorinated splash, and rooftop installations where wind carries marine air well inland. Within roughly a mile of open salt water, 316 is the usual call, and the fastener manufacturer's published corrosion guidance for that exposure is what should settle it for a given address.

Clip material follows the same logic. A 316 screw in a carbon steel clip is a galvanic couple waiting to fail. Matched packages ship clip and screw in compatible alloys, which is one more thing a buyer never has to check when the two arrive together.

Counting the Package: Coverage, Clip Yield, and Joist Spacing

Clip quantities derive from board coverage and joist spacing, and both numbers are fixed early, which is exactly why the clips can be counted at the mill rather than estimated on site. The arithmetic is short.

A 5/4x6 board covers about 2.1 linear feet per square foot of deck. So 100 square feet takes roughly 210 linear feet of decking. Dense tropical hardwood decking wants joists at 16 inches on center, which is 1.33 feet, so each linear foot of board crosses 0.75 joists. Multiply it out and 100 square feet needs about 158 clips, call it 160 with starter clips and waste. Face screwing the same 100 square feet at two screws per board per joist takes about 315 screws.

Those numbers shift with the plan. Drop to 12 inches on center for a diagonal layout or a 1x4 board and clip count climbs by a third. Structures carrying planters, hot tubs, or heavy furniture get engineered separately against the design values published through the American Wood Council codes and standards. The point stands: the count is deterministic. A supplier holding the deck plan can produce that number in advance, which is more than anyone can ask of a crew standing on a truck at 7 a.m.

The Substructure Is Part of the Fastener System

A clip transfers load into a joist, so the joist material, the joist spacing, and the ventilation under the deck determine whether the fastener system performs, and no species choice compensates for getting them wrong. Clips into wet pressure-treated joists loosen as the joist dries and shrinks. Clips into steel framing need self-drilling screws rated for the gauge. Clips into sleepers on a roof membrane need a slip sheet and a pedestal system that keeps the assembly off the waterproofing.

Ventilation is the quiet variable. Dense tropical decking wants air on both faces. Boxed-in perimeters, solid skirting, and decks laid tight to a roof deck trap moisture under the board and cup it, and no clip resists cupping in a board that is at 8 percent on top and 18 percent underneath. In service moisture content for exterior tropical decking should land between 12 and 16 percent, and the assembly has to let it stay there.

Fastener performance is downstream of all of it. The profile, the fastener, the ventilation path, the joist system, and the detailing at edges and penetrations carry the deck together. Species is one input among five.

Modified Wood in the Same Order, With Different Rules

Thermally modified and acetylated decking accepts the same clip families as tropical hardwood, but it comes with a hard length ceiling and a genuinely different warranty position. Thermory and Abodo Vulcan both run through modification kilns, and those kilns cap out around 16 feet, with metric stock landing just under 16 feet. Long-run rooftop layouts drawn at 18 or 20 feet run past what a modification kiln can produce, so those decks get filled in Ipe or Cumaru instead.

The trade in the other direction is real. Accoya, Thermory and Abodo Vulcan are manufactured products and carry manufacturer warranties. Solid unmodified wood does not and cannot. Wood is organic, and no honest supplier warranties a board of Ipe against the weather. What Ipe offers instead is EN 350 Class 1 natural durability, a service record measured in decades, and lengths a kiln cannot constrain.

Modified boards are also lighter and softer than Ipe, which changes clip torque and pilot requirements. A crew moving from Ipe to Abodo Vulcan on the same job needs to know that before the first clip is set.

Documentation That Should Ship With the Package

On commercial work the paperwork is part of the delivery, and a supplier that includes clips should also include the chain of custody and species documentation without being chased for it. Projects pursuing certification points need FSC chain of custody claims on the invoice, not a verbal assurance. When using a CITES-listed species, documentation is required and must accompany the material through the supply chain, which is administered under the CITES convention. Several decking and interior species carry that requirement, and the paperwork travels with the wood.

Fire rated assemblies need the E84 test report on file. Assembly questions on podium and mixed-use projects sit with the project architect and structural engineer rather than with a lumber supplier, and their teams can pull assembly guidance from WoodWorks. Set the profile deliberately. Pre-grooved for clips on the field of the deck. Solid edge for the perimeter boards, stair treads, and anywhere a clip has nothing to bite. Grooves DOWN, always. If the drawing says shiplap, the fasteners are visible, and the spec needs to say so rather than pretending a clip will appear.

Choose the alloy against the address. 305 stainless inland. 316 stainless anywhere near salt, chlorine, or reliable wind off the water. Compatible clip metal in both cases.

Order 16 inch on center joists as the default for dense tropicals, tighter for diagonals and narrow boards. Specify in service moisture content between 12 and 16 percent and confirm the assembly ventilates both faces of the board.

No. Shiplap on an exterior deck or wall takes visible fasteners only. A clip needs a machined edge groove to grip, and shiplap has no groove to grip.
