Went vertical with my siding and would do it again
Put vertical siding on a contemporary build and I'm glad I did. The reason nobody talks about: with vertical boards you can often run full height with no butt joints, so you lose the spot where water usually sneaks in. There are a few profile options, T&G, channel, or open joint over a vented cavity, and they all work as long as it's ventilated behind. I ran open joint and like the clean shadow lines. Mine was milled by my supplier. If you're on the fence about vertical, the no butt joint thing alone sold me.
