Why Cumaru Turns Silver in the First Place
Cumaru grays because ultraviolet light destroys lignin in the outermost layer of the wood, and that process is cosmetic, not structural. Lignin is the compound that binds wood cells together and carries most of the natural color. Sunlight breaks it apart in the top few thousandths of an inch. Rain then rinses the degraded material away and leaves behind loose, colorless cellulose fibers that scatter light back at your eye as silver-gray.
Airborne dirt, pollen, and mildew spores settle into that roughened surface and darken it further. Most decks that owners describe as "gone gray" are actually a thin bleached layer wearing a coat of biological grime. The wood underneath is unchanged.
The erosion rate matters here. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory's long-running weathering research in the Wood Handbook puts surface erosion for exposed softwoods on the order of a quarter inch per century. Dense tropical hardwoods erode more slowly still. Cumaru runs about 1,070 kg/m3 with a Janka hardness near 3,540 lbf, which means there is very little void space for water to move through and very little soft earlywood to wash away first.
So the honest framing is this. Oil does not save a Cumaru deck. It manages the color of a deck that was going to survive either way.
What Deck Oil Actually Does on a Species This Dense
On Cumaru, a penetrating oil is a pigment delivery system, and the pigment is the part doing the work. The oil carrier soaks a short distance into the surface, carries transparent iron oxide particles with it, and leaves them lodged in the top layer where they absorb and scatter UV before it reaches the lignin. Strip the pigment out and you have a product that darkens the wood for one season and then quits.
This is why clear finishes fail so quickly outdoors and why every experienced deck contractor stopped selling them years ago. A clear oil lets the full UV spectrum through to the wood. The lignin degrades on schedule. The board grays under a finish that still technically feels present.
Cumaru also brings its own chemistry to the fight. The species carries high extractive content, which is what earns it EN 350 Class 1 to Class 2 durability and what makes it resistant to decay fungi and termites without any treatment at all. Those same extractives make the wood slow to accept a finish. A fresh board is oily to the touch and closed at the pore.
The practical consequence is counterintuitive. Cumaru takes less finish than a softwood, holds it for a similar length of time, and punishes over-application far more severely. You are not saturating the wood. You are tinting it.
Timing the First Coat
The first coat of oil does not go on the day the deck is finished, and applying it then is the single most common reason a Cumaru finish fails in the first year. Two things stand in the way on a new deck. Mill glaze and surface moisture.
Planer knives burnish dense hardwood as they cut. The result is a compressed, polished face that sheds finish the way a waxed hood sheds water. Add the natural oils sitting at the surface of freshly milled Cumaru and you have a board that will accept pigment unevenly, blotch in the shade, and hold nothing at all in the sun.
Moisture is the second issue. J. That board still needs to equilibrate to your site once it is fastened down, and the top face needs to be genuinely dry through the first fraction of an inch before pigment goes on it.
Two workable approaches exist. Let the deck weather naturally for four to eight weeks, then clean it with a sodium percarbonate wood cleaner, brighten it with an oxalic acid solution to reset the surface pH and color, let it dry a full 48 hours, and oil. Or, on a deck that must look finished immediately, sand the surface lightly at 60 to 80 grit to cut the glaze, vacuum thoroughly, and oil once the board reads dry. Do not sand finer. Anything above 100 grit re-burnishes Cumaru and closes the pores you just opened.
Test before you commit. Flick water onto three or four boards in different exposures. If it beads and sits, the surface is not ready. If it darkens the wood within thirty seconds, oil it.
Choosing the Right Finish Chemistry
Specify a pigmented penetrating oil with a mildewcide, and rule out every film-forming product on the market for horizontal Cumaru. Spar urethane, marine varnish, acrylic deck coatings, and solid-color stains all fail on this species, and they fail in the same ugly way.
The mechanism is straightforward. A film needs adhesion, and Cumaru's extractives fight adhesion. A film on a horizontal surface takes standing water, foot traffic, and the worst UV angle available. Cumaru also moves seasonally, and a rigid film does not move with it. Water finds an edge, gets under the film, and the coating lifts in sheets. Now the owner faces stripping and sanding a 3,540 lbf hardwood, which is real work.
Penetrating oils have nothing to peel. When they wear, they wear evenly and lighten gradually, and recoating means cleaning and reapplying rather than removing. Look for these attributes on the data sheet:
- Transparent iron oxide or equivalent inorganic pigment, not dye. Dyes fade. Oxides do not.
- A resin content low enough that the product is labeled penetrating, not "hybrid film" or "deck coating."
- An EPA-registered mildewcide, which matters far more in the humid Southeast and the Pacific Northwest than in Arizona.
- A stated coverage rate with a separate figure for dense hardwoods. Manufacturers who publish one only for pine have not tested on Cumaru.

Oil-modified linseed and tung formulations, alkyd penetrating oils, and modern water-borne penetrating hybrids all work on Cumaru when they carry enough pigment. The pigment load is the variable that predicts performance, not the carrier.
How Cumaru Compares to the Alternatives
Every tropical decking species grays on the same schedule, and the only variable that changes is how much substrate you have to work with when you decide to restore it. Density and durability class tell you how forgiving the board will be over decades of cleaning and recoating.

Read that table with one point in mind. Cumaru sits second only to Ipe in hardness and above it in density, and it costs less than Ipe per board foot. Applying Oil Without Ruining the Deck
Application on Cumaru succeeds or fails on how little product you leave behind. A dense board cannot absorb what a pine board absorbs. Everything you apply beyond what the wood takes sits on top, stays tacky, collects dirt, feeds mildew, and turns blotchy within weeks.
The sequence that works:
- Wash with a sodium percarbonate cleaner. Agitate with a stiff synthetic brush. Rinse completely.
- Brighten with oxalic acid if the deck has grayed or shows tannin staining. This is a chemical step, not a cosmetic one. It restores surface pH so the oil bonds correctly.
- Wait 48 hours minimum in dry weather. Longer after heavy cleaning. The wood must be dry, not just the surface.
- Check the forecast for 24 to 48 hours of dry weather after application, and check surface temperature. Between roughly 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, out of direct midday sun. Hot boards flash the carrier off before the pigment penetrates.
- Apply thin with a stain pad, brush, or short-nap roller followed immediately by back-brushing. Work two or three boards at a time, full length, to avoid lap marks.
- Wipe back all excess within 15 to 20 minutes with a clean cloth or dry pad. This step is mandatory on Cumaru. It is what separates a deck that looks right for a year from one that looks streaked by August.
- Expect several hundred square feet of coverage per gallon, well beyond what the label predicts for softwood. If you are hitting the softwood number, you are applying too much.
A second coat is worth applying only if the first coat absorbed fully and the board still reads thirsty within an hour. Wet-on-wet, wiped back the same way. On most Cumaru, one properly wiped coat is the finish.

Setting a Realistic Recoat Schedule
Plan on refreshing pigmented oil once a year on a Cumaru deck in full southern exposure, and every 18 to 24 months on shaded, covered, or northern-exposure decks. Anyone quoting a three-year interval on horizontal tropical hardwood in the sun has not maintained one.
Exposure drives everything. A rooftop deck in Phoenix or a poolside surface in South Florida takes UV loading that a shaded Pennsylvania backyard never sees. Reflected heat off light-colored walls, glass, or water measurably raises the effective dose on the boards nearest the reflector. Those boards will fade first and will tell you when the deck needs attention.
Coastal projects add salt and constant humidity. Tree cover adds pollen, leaf tannin, and shade that slows drying and encourages mildew. Neither shortens the wood's life. Both shorten the finish's life.
Build the calendar around two washes and one recoat:
- Spring: clear the gaps and the joist bays below, wash the surface, inspect fasteners and flashing.
- Fall: clear leaf litter before it sits over winter. Wet organic debris packed in a board gap is the one condition that can actually threaten a Class 1 species.
- Recoat when color fade becomes visible across a full board face, not on a fixed date. The deck tells you.
The trigger for recoating is fade, never peeling. If a penetrating oil is peeling on your Cumaru, it was over-applied or it was not a penetrating oil.
Diagnosing Surface Problems Correctly
Most of what owners call surface deterioration on a Cumaru deck is contamination that washes off in an afternoon. Getting the diagnosis right saves an unnecessary sanding job.
Black or dark gray blotches, especially in shade and under furniture, are mildew. Sodium percarbonate removes it. Chlorine bleach also removes it and should stay off the deck. Bleach degrades lignin (the exact damage you are trying to prevent), corrodes fasteners, and kills the plantings around the deck.
Rust-brown streaks running downhill from fastener heads are extractive bleed, a normal first-year behavior in Cumaru. Oxalic acid dissolves it. Blue-black staining directly around a fastener head is a different problem entirely. That is iron reacting with the wood's tannins, and it means a non-stainless fastener is in the board. Oxalic acid lifts the stain, but the fastener has to come out or it comes back.
A fuzzy, fibrous surface texture means the deck was pressure washed too aggressively. If you use a washer at all, stay under about 1,200 psi, use a 40-degree fan tip, hold it 12 inches off, and keep it moving with the grain. A garden hose and a brush do the job on nearly every deck and cannot destroy the surface.
Fine surface checking along the grain is the wood responding to moisture cycling, not a finish failure. Pigmented oil slows it by moderating how fast the surface takes on and gives up water. Nothing eliminates it, and no supplier offers a warranty against it on solid, unmodified wood.
What Oil Cannot Fix
Installation controls more of a Cumaru deck's long-term appearance than any finish schedule does. A perfectly oiled deck built over a sealed, unventilated crawl space will cup and check while an unfinished deck with airflow underneath stays flat for decades.
The details that matter:

- Ventilation under the deck. Air must move across the underside. A skirted deck sitting on damp soil with no cross-flow dries one face and not the other, and that imbalance is what cups boards. - End sealing at every cut. Exposed end grain takes on water many times faster than face grain. Wax-based end sealer, applied at the saw, before the board is set.
- Fastener selection. 316 stainless for coastal work, without exception. Face screwing with plugs is the traditional approach on Cumaru and always requires pre-drilling and countersinking. - Profile logic on the vertical surfaces around the deck. Shiplap siding takes visible fasteners. Only tongue and groove works with hidden fasteners. On siding and porch ceilings, the groove faces down so water drains out rather than collecting in the joint.
- Layout math. A 5/4x6 board covers about 2.1 linear feet per square foot of deck, which is the figure to run your material takeoff against.
Oil applied over a bad assembly buys appearance for a season. It does not buy performance.
Choosing to Let It Gray
Letting a Cumaru deck silver is a legitimate specification, and the decision is reversible at any point. The wood's durability comes from its extractives, not from a coating, so an unfinished Cumaru deck delivers the same service life as an oiled one and asks only for seasonal cleaning.
The tradeoff is uniformity. Graying is exposure-dependent. Boards under a table, in the shadow of a railing, or beneath a pergola gray slower than boards in open sun, and the result on a large deck is patchwork rather than the even driftwood tone people picture. Moving the furniture around helps. Accepting the variation helps more.
Reversal is straightforward. Clean with sodium percarbonate, brighten with oxalic acid, dry, and oil. The bleached layer is thin enough that chemistry alone usually recovers the color without sanding. A deck left gray for a decade comes back.
Where this decision gets made for you is on commercial and multifamily work. HOAs, condo boards, and hospitality owners often mandate a maintained appearance, and that mandate is what puts a deck on a recoat contract. Worth resolving in the specification rather than at the first board meeting.

Alternates worth evaluating: if the owner wants a written warranty on the material itself, solid unmodified hardwood is the wrong category and no reputable supplier will offer one.
