The Short Answer: Garapa

Garapa is the easiest tropical hardwood decking species for a contractor to cut, drill and fasten on site, and Red Balau finishes a close second. Garapa runs roughly 1,700 lbf on the Janka scale at a density near 855 kg/m3. Ipe, the benchmark of the category, sits at about 3,680 lbf and 1,050 kg/m3. More than double the hardness. That gap is not a spec-sheet abstraction. It shows up in how many blades a crew burns through, how long a cordless drill lasts between batteries, how hard a carpenter has to lean into a miter saw, and how many boards get set before the light goes.

Teak works more easily still at around 1,070 lbf, and nobody disputes that. It also almost never appears on a commercial decking takeoff, and the variability between old-growth and plantation stock puts it in a separate conversation. Among the species that actually arrive on a jobsite by the unit, Garapa is the one crews get through fastest.

Now the part that matters more than the answer. Easiest to install and correct for the project are two different questions, and buyers who conflate them regret it. Garapa surrenders durability class and surface hardness to Ipe. A rooftop amenity deck in Miami and a backyard deck in Ohio do not want the same board. And a badly detailed Garapa deck will fail long before a well-detailed Ipe deck shows its age, which means the species line on the submittal is only one input among several.

"Easy to Install" Splits Into Four Separate Properties

Janka hardness measures resistance to indentation, not how a board behaves under a carbide tooth, which is why crews get surprised by species that look friendly on paper. Four material properties drive site labor, and they overlap only partly.

Density comes first. It governs the load on every cutting edge and the weight in every pair of hands. A 16 foot 5/4x6 Ipe board runs about 40 pounds. The same board in Garapa lands closer to 33. Silica is second, and it is the property that catches experienced carpenters off guard. Silica inclusions in the cell walls abrade carbide the way a sharpening stone abrades a chisel. Several Shorea species sold as Balau carry measurable silica. Some plantation Teak does too. A board can feel forgiving under a hand plane and still kill a blade in an afternoon.

Third is grain orientation. Cumaru and Massaranduba grow with interlocked grain that reverses direction from one growth increment to the next, and that is precisely the condition that produces tearout when a router bit or planer knife runs against the rise. Fourth is extractive content. Oils, gums and waxes pack the gullets of a blade, cause burning at slow feed rates, and turn ordinary sawdust into a respiratory problem. Where Each Species Lands on Workability and Durability

The tropical decking species sort into three tiers by install labor, and durability runs almost exactly the opposite direction. Garapa and Red Balau occupy the friendly tier. Jatoba sits in the middle. Ipe, Cumaru and Massaranduba make up the tier that punishes dull tooling and impatience. That inverse relationship is the whole trade buried inside this question, and no species escapes it.

Read the table both directions before deciding. Ipe holds EN 350 Class 1 durability and earns a Class A flame spread rating under ASTM E84, meaning a flame-spread index of 25 or less with nothing added to it, which is why it keeps winning rooftop and municipal boardwalk specifications where the code official has a say. Garapa buys back labor and gives some of that performance up. Both statements are true at once.

Why Garapa Wins on Labor

Garapa is the only tropical decking species that lets a competent deck crew work at something near their pressure-treated pace. It comes off Apuleia leiocarpa, blond to golden honey in color, tight grained and straight enough that a rip cut tracks true without fighting the fence. The published property data for Garapa puts it in the working range of white oak, and that is close to how it feels in the hands.

Crosscuts come off clean with an ordinary blade. A chamfer takes one router pass instead of three. Screw heads seat with a standard pilot rather than a pilot plus a separate countersink plus luck. Sixteen foot boards land in the low thirties by weight, so one carpenter carries and places a board without calling for help, which quietly changes how a two-person crew organizes its whole day.

What Garapa still demands is honest respect. Pilot every fastener within about 2 inches of a board end or it splits. Seal every fresh cut with a wax-based end sealer. Gap it properly, since it moves. Red Balau and Jatoba Occupy the Middle Ground

Red Balau gives up almost nothing to Garapa on workability while adding warmer color and a bit more surface hardness. Balau is a trade group rather than a single botanical species, drawn from several Shorea woods, and it ranges roughly 1,700 to 2,000 lbf depending on the exact species and where it grew. Density sits near 865 kg/m3.

It crosscuts cleanly. It takes screws with a normal pilot. The catch is the silica, which dulls blades faster than the Janka number would predict and throws off crews who use hardness alone to plan consumables. Budget spare blades as though you were cutting Ipe, even though the boards feel light. Red Balau also arrives with more board-to-board color variation than Ipe or Garapa. On a large field that reads as character. On a small entry porch it reads as a mistake unless somebody racks and sorts the pile before a single screw goes in.

Jatoba at about 2,690 lbf is the honest middle. Harder than the Balaus, softer than Ipe, and noticeably more dimensionally active than either. It blunts tooling. It responds to humidity swings with real movement, which makes gapping and moisture content at delivery more consequential than they are with Garapa. Jatoba is a strong interior and covered-porch species and a demanding one in full weather exposure.

What the Dense Tier Asks in Exchange for Service Life

Ipe, Cumaru and Massaranduba cost the most labor per square foot and return the longest service life on that same square foot. Ipe at 3,680 lbf and 1,050 kg/m3 is the reference point of the entire category. EN 350 Class 1, Class A fire performance in its natural state, and a record on public boardwalks measured in decades. Every fastener gets a pilot hole. Every bit is a consumable, not a tool. Blades come off the saw dull rather than chipped, which tells you the wear is abrasive rather than impact driven.

Cumaru sits nearly as hard at 3,540 lbf and slightly denser at 1,070 kg/m3, and it adds two wrinkles. Interlocked grain means router and planer work wants a light pass with a sharp edge and a willingness to reverse direction. Waxy extractives build a film on carbide, so a blade feels dead well before it actually is, and cleaning it restores most of the cut.

Massaranduba is the heaviest common option at roughly 1,150 kg/m3 and 3,190 lbf. Deep red, striking, and the least forgiving of the three when moisture content is wrong. It end checks. It moves more across the grain than Ipe does. Getting it delivered at the correct moisture content and fastened without a long delay on site outweighs any tooling decision a crew might make.

The right consumable package erases a large share of the labor difference between Ipe and Garapa. Start at the blade. A 60 to 80 tooth carbide blade with a triple-chip grind is the standard for dense tropical hardwood. Alternate top bevel blades cut faster and die faster in this material. Feed rate stays steady and moderate. Feed too slowly and Ipe and Cumaru scorch. Push too hard and the cut wanders off the line.

Pilot holes stop being optional in the dense tier of Ipe, Cumaru and Massaranduba, and they remain smart practice at board ends in Garapa. Size the pilot to the screw's root diameter, not the thread diameter. A tapered bit with an integrated countersink collapses two operations into one, which across a large deck saves thousands of individual motions and a meaningful number of hours.

Fastener metallurgy is a durability decision that doubles as an install decision. Use stainless. Within a mile of salt water, 316 stainless is the specification, since the acidic extractives in tropical hardwoods stain the board and eat plated or coated carbon steel from the inside out. Stainless is softer than hardened steel, so it snaps in an unpiloted hole in Ipe. A torque-limiting driver saves more screws than an impact driver ever will.

Dust earns its own paragraph. Ipe and Cumaru dust cause respiratory and dermal reactions in a real share of crews, and the effect is cumulative across a week. Extraction at the saw, eye protection and an actual respirator separate a productive Thursday from a crew that has quietly slowed down and will not say why.

Profile and Substructure Set the Real Labor Number

How a board is machined and what it lands on move install time more than the species name on the packing list. Square edge decking with face screws and plugs installs slowest and repairs easiest. Side-grooved decking with clips flies across an open field and slows down again at every perimeter, every stair nose and every cut-in around a post.

Set joists at 16 inches on center under dense tropical hardwood decking. That number is not tradition. Dense hardwood is stiff and unforgiving, and wider spacing turns up later as deflection underfoot and boards that cup. Vertical surfaces ride along with most decking packages, so the rules there deserve stating plainly. Shiplap takes a visible fastener. Only tongue and groove accepts a hidden fastener. Grooves face down so water leaves the joint rather than parking in it. Material goes on furring strips or joists so air moves behind it, never tight to sheathing. Moisture Content at Delivery Predicts What Happens After the Crew Leaves

Tropical decking should arrive between 12 and 16 percent moisture content for exterior service, and material outside that band creates problems no species choice repairs. Decking kiln dried to furniture standard is defective for outdoor use. It picks up moisture, swells, and pinches hard against its neighbors. Green material shrinks and opens gaps that look like somebody botched the layout.

Stack on site with stickers, out of direct sun, covered but never sealed under plastic. A few days of acclimation on the actual site beats any number from a lab. Seal every fresh cut end. On the dense species, end grain is where checking starts, and an open cut left overnight in dry air can check before the board ever gets fastened.

Gap for the species and the season. Material landing dry in a Phoenix January wants different gapping than the same board arriving on the Gulf Coast in August. Modified Wood and Cedar When the Species List Is Open

Thermally modified and acetylated woods cut more easily than any tropical hardwood, and unlike solid unmodified species they carry published warranties. Two constraints are real. Modified material tops out around 16 feet, since the kilns that do the modification are only so long, and the metric sizes land a touch shy of that mark. Long runs mean more butt joints or a layout blocked to suit. And thermally modified stock is more brittle than the species it started as, so pilot holes near ends stay mandatory even though the material feels soft under a saw.

Cedar belongs in this conversation too, and it belongs there with respect. It is the default standard for good reason, it handles freeze-thaw cycling extremely well, and complaints about cedar failing are rare. CVG cedar, clear vertical grain, is the stable premium material for trim, soffits and exposed detail. STK, select tight knot, serves a completely different market and a different aesthetic. Neither is a lesser Ipe. They are a different use case entirely, and a cedar deck installed with proper ventilation and fastening will outperform a tropical hardwood deck installed badly.

Substructure. Joists at 16 inches on center, ventilated below. On a rooftop or over a membrane, use pedestals or sleepers sized so air actually moves under the field. A dense hardwood deck with no drying path underneath will cup no matter which species is on top of it.

Where the project is a commercial roof deck or a municipal boardwalk, the calculus flips.
