Where Pre-Grooved Tropical Decking Actually Comes From
Pre-grooved tropical hardwood decking comes from importers who run their own moulders, because the groove is a milling operation performed on the same pass that puts the eased edge and the finished face on the board. That narrows the field fast. Most lumber yards buy tropical decking already surfaced from a wholesaler and resell it in whatever profile arrived on the container. They cannot cut a groove to your clip. They can only sell you the groove somebody else chose.

Site-Grooving Dense Tropical Hardwood Is a Losing Proposition
Cutting your own grooves in Ipe or Cumaru on site is possible, and it is the wrong call on any deck large enough to matter. Crews do it. They set up a router table or a biscuit-style slot cutter, run every board twice, and absorb the cost in labor and blade wear.
The arithmetic is unkind. Ipe measures roughly 3,680 lbf on the Janka scale and carries a density near 1,050 kg per cubic meter. Its natural extractives are what earn it a durability rating of Class 1 under EN 350, and the density behind those numbers goes with a Class A rating under ASTM E84. Those same numbers destroy carbide. A slot cutter that would run cedar all day long starts producing burnished, out-of-spec grooves in tropical hardwood after a small fraction of that same footage. The groove drifts. The clip fit drifts with it.
Then there is registration. A hand-fed router references off the board face, and tropical decking is not perfectly flat coming out of a bundle. A moulder references off a bed and pressure rolls, cutting the groove and the face in the same pass, so the slot sits at a fixed distance from the walking surface on every board. That is the whole point. A clip system depends on every groove in the deck sitting at the same height.
Site-grooving also generates a startling volume of fine, dense dust. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory documents the machining behavior of dense tropical species, and anyone who has run a router through Massaranduba for an afternoon understands why respiratory protection is not optional.
The Groove Is Not Generic and Suppliers Who Say Otherwise Are Guessing
There is no industry standard groove for hidden-fastener decking, which means "pre-grooved" tells you almost nothing until you know which clip it was cut for. This is the single largest source of failed grooved orders.
Four dimensions define the slot. Height, meaning how tall the opening is. Depth, meaning how far into the board edge it runs. Setback, meaning the distance from the finished face down to the top wall of the groove. And wall thickness above the slot, which is what actually resists a clip pulling through.
Change any one of those and a different clip family is required. A stamped stainless clip that seats correctly in a slot cut 1/2 inch off the face will sit proud in a slot cut 5/8 inch off the face. It will still go in. The board will still lay down. Six months later the crown of the clip has telegraphed through the top wall of the groove and the deck has a stripe of split boards along one joist line.
The other variable is the spacer built into most clips. A clip that self-spaces to 3/16 inch and a clip that self-spaces to 1/4 inch produce visibly different decks, and they produce different results in service. Boards installed at 12 to 16 percent moisture content in a humid climate will swell. Boards installed at that same moisture content in Phoenix will shrink. The spacing decision is a climate decision before it is an aesthetic one.
Which Tropical Species Are Available Pre-Grooved
Any tropical decking species that a mill runs in a standard thickness can be grooved, and in practice that means the full deck of dense South American hardwoods plus Red Balau and Teak. The species choice drives hardness, density, movement and appearance. The groove itself is indifferent.

Notice what the table implies. The softer the species, the more the clip choice matters, because the groove wall carries the entire uplift load of the board. A clip family that works fine in Ipe can crush the top wall in Garapa if the installer leans on the driver. Decking Grooves and Siding Grooves Are Different Animals
An edge groove on a deck board and a tongue and groove profile on siding solve different problems, and the terminology gets mixed constantly. Worth separating them.
Deck boards get a slot centered on each edge. The clip sits in the gap between two boards, engages both slots, and screws down into the joist. The gap stays open. Water falls through.
Siding is a different conversation. Shiplap takes visible fasteners, full stop, and there is no legitimate way to blind-nail a shiplap profile. Only tongue and groove siding works with hidden fasteners, where the nail goes through the tongue and the next board's groove covers it. Material runs on furring strips over the sheathing so the assembly can breathe, and the grooves face down so water drains out instead of sitting in a horizontal channel. Bring both up when you call. A supplier who runs a moulder can cut either one, but the setups are unrelated.
What to Ask Before You Release a Grooved Order
Six questions separate a grooved order that installs clean from one that generates a change order.
First, which clip family is the groove cut for, by manufacturer and model. Not "a standard groove." A name.
Second, what is the setback from the finished face, in decimal inches. Write it on the submittal.
Third, are the boards grooved on both edges or one. Perimeter boards and picture frame borders need one grooved edge and one clean edge, and that count has to come off the takeoff before the order runs.
Fourth, what moisture content will the boards arrive at. In-service moisture content for exterior tropical decking lands between 12 and 16 percent in most of the country. Boards that arrive wetter than that will shrink after install and open the gaps past what the clip set.
Fifth, what lengths. Solid tropical hardwood runs long, and long boards mean fewer butt joints, which matters more on a clip deck than on a face-screwed deck because every butt joint on a hidden-fastener system needs a doubled joist or a joist sister.
Sixth, are the clips and screws shipping on the same truck. A grooved deck with no clips on site is a pile of lumber.
The Frame Under a Clip Deck Has Less Tolerance Than a Face-Screwed Frame
Hidden fasteners do not forgive a sloppy frame, because a clip cannot pull a cupped board down the way a face screw can. That single sentence explains most clip-deck complaints.
Dense tropical hardwood decking wants joists at 16 inches on center. Closer for diagonal layouts, closer again for anything carrying commercial loads, and the American Wood Council publishes the span and connection guidance that a designer should be working from. Joist tops need to be in plane. A crown of an eighth of an inch on one joist reads as a hump in the finished deck and there is no fastener on top of that board to argue with it.
Fastener metallurgy is not negotiable near salt water. Use 316 stainless for the clips, the clip screws and the perimeter screws in coastal work. Mixed metals in a wet tropical hardwood assembly will stain the boards and eat the fasteners.
Ventilation underneath the deck matters as much as anything above it. Tropical hardwood that can only dry from one face will cup toward the dry side. Give the underside air.
Takeoff arithmetic, since it comes up on every job. A 5/4x6 board covers roughly 2.1 linear feet per square foot of deck. Multiply that by the number of joist crossings and you have your clip count, plus waste, plus the spares nobody remembers to order.
Where Grooved Stock Runs Out and Face Screws Take Over
Every clip deck has boards that cannot be clipped, and pretending otherwise is how a job stalls at the perimeter. Starter boards. Closing boards. Picture frame borders. Boards that die into a wall, a post, a curb or a rail. Fascia.
Those get face screwed and plugged, or face screwed and left exposed if the aesthetic allows. Pre-drill and countersink every one. Tropical hardwood at these densities splits if a screw goes in dry.
Stair treads are their own case. Most designers face-fasten treads regardless of what the field does, because a tread that works loose is a liability and clip systems on stairs are difficult to inspect. Accessible routes bring in additional requirements around gaps and surface transitions, and the US Access Board guidance governs there rather than any decking manufacturer's literature.
Modified Wood as a Grooved Alternative, and Its Real Limit
Thermally modified and acetylated boards can be supplied pre-grooved, and they cap out at length in a way solid tropical decking never does. Thermory and Abodo Vulcan both run grooved profiles. Accoya does as well.
The constraint is the kiln. Modified stock tops out around 16 feet, and the metric-length products land just under that. If the drawing calls for 20 foot runs with no butt joints, modified wood cannot do it and no amount of ordering lead time changes that. Solid tropical hardwood can.
What modified products bring in exchange is dimensional stability and, unlike solid unmodified wood, a manufacturer warranty. Solid tropical decking carries no warranty from anyone, which is normal and correct for a natural material. Buyers who want a warranty document in the submittal package should be looking at Thermory, Abodo Vulcan or Accoya rather than expecting one on Ipe.

Species and grade first. Ipe for the hardest groove wall and Class A fire performance where the International Code Council model codes call for it, meaning an ASTM E84 flame-spread index of 25 or less. Cumaru where the budget needs to come in under Ipe and the color range is acceptable. Garapa where a light deck and a cooler surface matter more than maximum hardness.
Profile second. 5/4x6 grooved both edges for the field, with a quantity of one-edge-grooved boards called out separately for the perimeter. Do not let that count get estimated on site.
Clip third, by manufacturer and model number, with the groove dimensions written out in decimal inches underneath it.
Frame fourth. Joists at 16 inches on center, tops planed into plane, doubled at every butt joint, ventilated underneath.
Fasteners fifth. 316 stainless throughout on coastal projects, and 316 anyway on anything within reach of pool chemistry.
Certification last, and only if it is real. FSC certified material has to be specified as FSC and ordered as FSC, because chain of custody does not get applied retroactively. When using a CITES-listed species, documentation is required and has to travel with the shipment, which is a scheduling item as much as a paperwork item.
