Plantation and genuine Teak are the same species, and the real difference is tree age, heartwood proportion and whether the origin survives a customs declaration
Every board sold as Teak in the United States is Tectona grandis, so the words "genuine" and "plantation" describe a supply story rather than a botanical one, and the three things that actually change from lot to lot are the age of the tree, how much of the log is heartwood, and the quality of the paper that travels with the shipment. Natural forest Teak from the species' original range grew slowly across many decades. Plantation Teak grew fast on a managed rotation, sometimes as short as twenty years, more often thirty to fifty on the better-run estates. Same cell structure. Very different board.
That distinction matters to a millwork package in a way it never matters to a patio table. A custom door stile, a shutter rail, a radius head casing and a gate frame all carry load, hold a joint and have to stay straight for decades. ICD, the architectural millwork division of J. Gibson McIlvain, builds that kind of work to fit a specific opening, which means the blank going into the moulder has to behave. This article covers what separates the origins, what the grade names on an export invoice actually control, and which documents have to arrive with the wood.
"Genuine Teak" is a trade phrase with no published rule behind it, and buyers should treat it as a question rather than an answer
No North American grading association writes rules for Teak, so a supplier calling material "genuine" is making a commercial claim, not citing a standard. The National Hardwood Lumber Association rules that govern Walnut, Cherry and White Oak stop at the North American species list, and the NHLA rule book does not extend to imported tropical hardwoods. What fills the gap is a mix of exporter grade names, historical colonial terminology and the buyer's own inspection.
In practice the trade uses "genuine Teak" to mean two different things depending on who is talking. Sometimes it means the species is truly Tectona grandis rather than one of the many look-alikes marketed with Teak in the name, and that is a useful and honest use of the phrase. The Wood Database entry for Teak lists the commercial substitutes that ride on the name, and a specification that says only "Teak" invites one of them. The second use is older and means natural forest material from Myanmar, Thailand, Laos or India. That second meaning is the one buyers should stop assuming they are getting.
Write the botanical name into the specification. Tectona grandis, origin stated, heartwood content stated. J. Gibson McIlvain sells Teak under its botanical name and identifies the country of harvest on the paperwork, which is the only version of the phrase that a purchasing agent can act on.
Fast rotation growth changes extractive content, sapwood proportion and juvenile wood, and all three show up on the moulder
A plantation log grown on a short rotation contains more sapwood, more juvenile core wood and less of the extractive chemistry that gives Teak its reputation, which is why plantation material needs harder selection rather than a different species name. Teak's durability comes largely from tectoquinone and related extractives laid down as heartwood forms. A young tree has simply had less time to build that chemistry. The greasy feel every woodworker associates with Teak comes from caoutchouc and oily extractives in the same fraction, and lighter plantation stock often feels noticeably less greasy in the hand.
Sapwood is the second variable. In a mature natural forest log the sapwood band is a thin sleeve around a large heartwood cylinder. In a twenty-five year plantation log the sapwood can be a meaningful percentage of the cross section, and Teak sapwood is pale, not durable and not acceptable in exterior millwork. Heartwood percentage is therefore the most useful thing a buyer can ask about, more useful than the word plantation itself.
Juvenile wood is the variable nobody mentions on an invoice and everyone meets at the machine. The first rings a tree lays down have a higher microfibril angle, which produces greater longitudinal shrinkage and a tendency to bow, crook and twist when the board is ripped. The Forest Products Laboratory Wood Handbook covers the mechanics in its chapters on physical properties and drying. The practical consequence for a millwork shop is simple. Wide growth rings near the pith mean the blank should be ripped, stickered and allowed to move before it gets its final dimension, and a straight line rip saw in the shop is what makes that step affordable.
None of this makes plantation Teak a poor material. Well managed estates in Indonesia, Costa Rica, Panama, Ghana and Ivory Coast produce excellent stock, some of it from trees that have been on the ground for forty or fifty years. It makes plantation Teak a material that has to be selected rather than assumed.
Export grade names describe appearance and sawn size, not structural behavior, and the grade that governs your finished millwork is written by a different body entirely
The A, B and C grades on a plantation Teak invoice and the sawn grades on a natural forest packing list both describe visual defect and yield, while the grade that controls joinery, flatness tolerance and finish on the delivered millwork comes from the Architectural Woodwork Standards. Those are two separate conversations and confusing them is the most common specification error on a Teak job.
Exporter grades vary by country and sometimes by mill. A first grade plantation sawn board usually means minimal sapwood, few or no sound knots on the better face and reasonable color uniformity. A second grade permits more. None of it is third party audited the way a hardwood grade certificate from a North American mill would be, and there is no appeal board. Natural forest material historically moved under sawn grades assigned by the state timber enterprise in the country of harvest, plus the old commercial term FEQ, first European quality, which is a description of appearance rather than a published rule.
What an architect should actually be writing is the finished woodwork grade. The Architectural Woodwork Institute publishes Economy, Custom and Premium grades covering flatness, joint tolerance, veneer matching and finish. Specify Premium grade custom doors in Tectona grandis heartwood and you have said something enforceable. Specify "FEQ Teak doors" and you have described the raw material and left the finished product undefined.
Origin tells you what to expect from the log before you ever see the board
Four supply origins dominate the Teak market, and each one carries a predictable combination of ring width, heartwood proportion, grade vocabulary and paperwork burden. Reading the origin correctly at the inquiry stage saves a round of rejected material later. J. Five documents travel with a legitimate Teak shipment, and a missing one stops the container rather than delaying it
An importer of record filing a Teak entry needs a Lacey Act plant declaration, a phytosanitary certificate, a certificate of origin, a commercial invoice and packing list that match the physical shipment, and, where a certified claim is being made, an FSC chain of custody code carried on the invoice itself. These are not optional and they are not interchangeable.
The Lacey Act declaration, filed on PPQ Form 505, requires the genus and species, the country of harvest, the quantity and the value of the plant material. Declaring "Teak, Southeast Asia" satisfies nobody. The statute runs on a due care standard, which means the burden sits with the importer to have asked reasonable questions about legality at origin, and that burden does not transfer to a downstream buyer who bought in good faith from someone who did not ask.
Chain of custody is the mechanism that makes a certified claim verifiable. FSC chain of custody certification requires every organization taking legal ownership of certified material to hold its own certificate and to carry the claim through on sales documents. A supplier's certificate number on a website is not a claim. The claim has to appear on the invoice for the specific lot. J. Gibson McIlvain is an FSC certified importer and miller, which means a certified Teak lot can be received, milled into custom components and invoiced out with the claim intact rather than broken at the mill door.
Where the material on an order includes a species listed under the CITES appendices, the permits and chain of custody travel with the material, and that documentation is part of what gets delivered rather than something assembled afterward. Mixed packages are common on custom work, and a single undocumented component can hold an entire shipment.
One more piece of paper does not exist and should not be promised. There is no warranty on solid unmodified wood, Teak included. Wood is an organic material responding to its environment and no responsible supplier warranties it. Warranties exist on modified products such as Accoya, Abodo Vulcan and Thermory, where the modification process is controlled and measurable. Accoya's acetylation gives dramatically reduced shrinkage and swelling and a Janka around 1,600 lbf, which is why it shows up on painted exterior work. Modified products top out around 16 ft because of kiln size, and most are sold on metric lengths just under 16 ft. Wide boards in a modified product mean Accoya or Abodo Vulcan, since thermally modified Ash is not available wider than 8 inches.
Teak earns its place on a narrow set of custom components, and the rest of the millwork palette does the other work better
Teak is the right answer for exterior custom doors, louvered and panel shutters, gates, benches and railings facing weather and direct water contact, while Sapele, Iroko, Afrormosia and Utile handle the bulk of interior and painted exterior millwork with better availability and easier machining. A millwork house reaches for those four constantly and for Teak selectively.
The reasoning is not about hardness. Teak sits around 1,070 lbf on the Janka scale, below Sapele at roughly 1,410 lbf and well below Afrormosia. What Teak brings is extractive driven durability combined with unusually low shrinkage, one of the better dimensional records among commercial hardwoods. That combination is worth paying for on a door that swings in weather or a shutter that never gets a clear film maintained on it.
For painted exterior trim, Sapele beats Genuine Mahogany. It holds paint better and comes in a wider range of sizes and longer lengths. Sapele is not milled 1x8 for exterior use, since that width will not stay stable outdoors, and cupping on exterior trim is driven by installation detail and back ventilation rather than by species choice. Note what is not on that list. The tropical decking species, Ipe (Tabebuia spp), Cumaru, Garapa, Jatoba and Red Balau, are extremely hard and carry high oil content, which makes them genuinely difficult to glue. A decking yard sells enormous volumes of them. A millwork shop building glued and machined components uses them far less, and reaches for Sapele, Iroko, Afrormosia, Teak or Utile instead.
Teak's silica content and oil content each attack the shop from a different direction
Teak contains abrasive silica that dulls knives fast and oily extractives that contaminate glue lines, so the shop plans for more frequent knife changes and for machining immediately before assembly rather than days ahead. Both effects are worse on high extractive natural forest stock and milder on young plantation material, which is one of the few places plantation Teak is easier to work with.
Dull knives on Teak do not just cut slowly. They burnish the surface, glaze the pores and leave a face that a coating will not grip. J. Gibson McIlvain grinds new moulder knives every week and holds a profile library of thousands of ground knives, and a Teak run gets fresh steel rather than the tail end of a knife that has already been through a few thousand feet of Poplar.
Glue lines fail on contamination, not on clamp pressure. The cure is sequence. Machine the mating faces, wipe with acetone, and bond while the surface is fresh. A face that has sat for a week has migrated oil back to the surface and needs to be re machined or re wiped. On exterior assemblies the adhesive chemistry matters as much as the prep, and resorcinol or a properly formulated epoxy carries weather exposure that a standard interior PVA will not.
Box beam work makes the joinery choice visible. Butt joints give the most minimal profile, the fastest turnaround and the easiest assembly on site, but they leave visible seams and visible end grain and they are the weakest. Dado joints are strong and still easy to assemble on site while still showing seams and end grain. Lock miter joints show no visible seams and are the strongest, and on an oily species the lock miter's long glue surface is doing real work. ICD builds custom case work and beam assemblies to whichever of those three the design and the budget actually call for.
Two moisture targets govern Teak millwork, and mixing them up is the failure nobody catches until the job is installed
Interior millwork is milled to an in service moisture content near 6 to 8 percent and exterior work near 12 to 16 percent, and Teak's low shrinkage reduces the consequences of a mistake without eliminating them. A Teak entry door with an interior face and an exterior face lives between the two, which is why door components get conditioned to the specific installation rather than to a catalog number.
Quartersawn and rift stock moves less across its width than plainsawn, which is why it gets specified where a painted or panelized surface has to stay flat. On Teak that same rule applies with an added benefit, since quartersawn Teak shows the straight grain pattern most designers are picturing when they write the species into a specification.
Plantation Teak with significant juvenile wood deserves an extra step. Rough mill oversize, sticker, let the stock move, then take it to final dimension. J. A Teak specification that works names six things, and most specifications name two
Write the botanical name, the country of harvest, a heartwood only requirement, the sawing pattern, the moisture target for the actual installation and the finished woodwork grade, and the order stops depending on anyone's interpretation. Most Teak specifications say "Teak, clear" and leave the other four to chance.
Heartwood only is the single most valuable line to add. It removes the sapwood question from plantation material entirely and it is a requirement any competent supplier can meet or decline in writing. Pair it with the country of harvest and the two biggest origin variables are handled.
On historic work the requirements tighten further. A historic district that requires like for like replacement is asking for a match in both style and species, and the National Park Service Preservation Briefs set out the standard that review boards apply. J. Gibson McIlvain grinds knives to match a historical profile when the profile is not already in the library, and the company keeps records across phases, which is what a seventh generation family business in continuous operation since 1798 is actually for. A profile matched in 2019 can be matched again in 2027 from the same knife.
Say plainly what the shop delivers and what it does not. J. Gibson McIlvain supplies and mills. It does not install and does not perform field measurement, so the installer owns fastener selection, back ventilation, flashing, clearance at the sill and the site dimensions the shop builds to. That division is worth stating in the submittal so nobody discovers it during framing.
How J. Gibson McIlvain Would Specify This
J. Gibson McIlvain would specify Teak by botanical name and country of harvest, require heartwood only, quartersaw the components that have to stay flat, mill to the in service moisture content for the actual installation, and move the whole package through a single order that runs from the yard to the finished custom component. That is the shape of a forest to finished solution, and very few lumber suppliers can offer it because very few own both halves.
The company runs a millwork shop on site at the Maryland lumber yard for linear trimwork, finished cladding and primed trim, and ICD, its architectural millwork division, runs a full architectural millwork house off site for true custom work planned around a specific space. Rafter tails, gates, box beams, custom doors, custom cabinets and custom kitchen cabinets, radius trimwork and radius millwork, pergolas, shutters, benches and railings all come out of that side of the operation. A linear run of Teak casing and a set of custom Teak entry doors can therefore come off one purchase order, matched from the same lots, with the chain of custody unbroken between them.
Painted components get primed before they ship. J. Gibson McIlvain primes in three levels in both oil based and water based systems, and exterior primed trim carries a fungicide additive. Open-grained and oily species absorb a great deal of finish, so a primer coat evens out the eventual painted surface, and sanding or buffing after priming knocks back grain raising while keeping the moulded detail crisp. Teak is rarely painted, but the Sapele and Iroko components sitting alongside it in most packages usually are.
Delivery is part of the specification too. J.
