Density tracks a similar order. Ipe runs about 1,050 kg/m3 and Cumaru about 1,070 kg/m3, both dense enough to sink or nearly sink in water. Garapa sits near 820 kg/m3, or roughly 51 pounds per cubic foot. That gap is the single most underrated variable in a backyard job. In ground contact or in a termite-active region, that distinction is not academic.

Dent resistance follows the Janka spread. Dropped grill grates, patio furniture dragged across a board, a dog's nails at the door threshold. Garapa shows these events where Ipe shrugs them off. On a deck that hosts heavy furniture traffic, expect a lived-in surface sooner.

Fire rating is a real separator in some jurisdictions. Ipe achieves an ASTM E84 Class A rating, meaning a flame-spread index of 25 or less. Garapa should not be assumed to carry that rating. Where Cumaru Actually Fits

Cumaru delivers most of Ipe's mechanical performance at a lower cost, and it pays for that with more color variation and a more demanding installation. Buyers who want Ipe's numbers without Ipe's price land here constantly, and the logic is sound.

The tradeoffs are specific. Cumaru's grain interlocks aggressively, which makes it harder to surface cleanly and more prone to raised grain. Color runs from tan through medium brown to reddish, and boards from different bundles can look like different species until they weather together. Cumaru also has a distinct scent when cut, which some crews notice and some do not.

Weight-wise, Cumaru gives back nothing to Ipe. At roughly 1,070 kg/m3 it is every bit as heavy in the hands. If your reason for looking past Ipe is handling rather than budget, Cumaru does not solve your problem and Garapa does. Start with the joists. Dense hardwood decking wants framing at 16 inches on center for standard perpendicular installation, and 12 inches on center for diagonal patterns. Wider spacing produces deflection, deflection produces fastener movement, and fastener movement produces the squeaks and cupping that get blamed on the wood. Ventilation underneath is not optional. A deck that cannot dry from the bottom will cup, and it will cup regardless of species. Order by coverage, not by board count, and get the certification questions answered before the truck is loaded. A 5/4x6 board covers about 2.1 linear feet per square foot of deck.
