The short answer for a Northeast deck

Ipe is the best tropical hardwood decking species for residential projects across the Northeast, and Cumaru is the closest substitute when a project needs a species that costs less than Ipe without surrendering much service life. Ipe holds that position on measured properties, not folklore. Janka hardness sits near 3,680 lbf. Density runs around 1,050 kg/m3, heavy enough that the boards sink in water instead of floating. It carries EN 350 Class 1 durability, the highest decay classification the standard assigns, along with an ASTM E84 Class A fire rating, which means a flame spread index of 25 or less. Those numbers earn their keep in Portland, Maine in a way they never would in Phoenix.

A Northeast deck spends roughly half the year cycling through wet, frozen, thawed and wet again. That cycle is what dismantles softwood decking and second-tier hardwood alike. It is also why the species question, on its own, answers only part of the problem. Board selection sets the ceiling on how long a deck lasts. Substructure, profile, fastening and detailing decide whether you ever reach that ceiling. What the Northeast climate actually does to exterior wood

Freeze-thaw cycling, not raw winter cold, is the dominant destructive force on decking from Philadelphia to Bangor. Water that has migrated into the cell structure of a board expands close to nine percent when it freezes. Do that a hundred times in a season and the wood responds with surface checking, raised grain and open end checks that then admit more water. Southern climates never impose this. The Northeast imposes it relentlessly, and a deck in Connecticut can cycle through freeze and thaw dozens of times in a single February, at a frequency milder regions never impose on a board.

Snow compounds it. A drift that sits on a deck for three weeks holds the boards at fiber saturation the entire time, which is exactly the condition decay fungi need to establish. Then April arrives, relative humidity drops, and the same boards start giving up moisture fast. The seasonal equilibrium moisture content swing across most of the Northeast runs from roughly 11 percent during a dry stretch up to roughly 14 percent during a humid, wet one, and sheltered or fully exposed microclimates widen that band at either end. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory Wood Handbook documents these equilibrium relationships in detail, and they are the reason a species with high tangential shrinkage misbehaves here even when it performs acceptably in a milder region.

Two more Northeast-specific loads deserve mention. Coastal projects from the Jersey Shore through Cape Cod and Down East Maine sit in salt-laden air, which attacks fasteners long before it attacks the wood. Inland projects under mature hardwood canopy collect leaf litter, hold shade, and stay damp into midsummer, which favors surface mold on any species. Neither problem is solved by picking a different board. Both are solved by detailing, drainage and fastener metallurgy.

Ipe: the benchmark species for freeze-thaw country

Ipe outperforms every other commercially available decking species in the Northeast because its cell structure resists the two things that actually kill decks here, water uptake and abrasion. The vessels in Ipe are heavily occluded with tyloses and deposits, so liquid water moves through the board slowly. Slow uptake means less water available to freeze, and it means the wood spends less total time above the moisture threshold decay fungi require. Layered on top of that are the naturally occurring extractives, principally lapachol, that make the heartwood hostile to fungi and insects without any preservative treatment. Hardness matters more in the Northeast than most specifiers expect. Snow shovels get dragged across these decks. Ice melt granules get ground underfoot. Cast aluminum furniture gets shoved around in April. At roughly 3,680 lbf, Ipe simply refuses to register most of that. Softer decking species arrive at year five looking scoured near the door and the stairs.

Ipe is not a magic board. It is unforgiving to work. Every fastener needs a pilot hole and a countersink, carbide tooling is mandatory, and the dust irritates some crews. Boards are heavy enough that a 20 foot 5/4x6 is a genuine two-person carry. None of that is a reason to specify something else. It is a reason to budget labor hours honestly and to hire a crew that has run the material before.

Cumaru: the closest real substitute

Cumaru delivers roughly 95 percent of Ipe's hardness at a lower cost, and it is the right call on Northeast projects where the deck is large, the exposure is moderate and the crew is experienced. Janka lands near 3,540 lbf and density near 1,070 kg/m3, so on paper it reads almost identical to Ipe. The differences show up in behavior rather than in the spec sheet.

Cumaru has more pronounced interlocked grain and higher tangential movement. That translates to a board that reacts harder to a wet spring following a dry winter. Install Cumaru at the wrong moisture content and you will see cupping and end checking that the same crew would never see out of Ipe. Install it correctly, at the right in-service moisture content, on a properly ventilated frame, with the right gap, and it performs for decades. The color is warmer and considerably more variable than Ipe, running from tan through reddish brown, and it carries a faint vanilla-almond scent when cut that some clients love and some do not. On covered porches and shaded yards, Cumaru is an easy recommendation. On a fully exposed south-facing pool deck in July, Ipe is the safer specification.

Massaranduba, Jatoba, Red Balau and Garapa: where each one belongs

The remaining tropical decking species are not lesser versions of Ipe, they are different tools with narrower Northeast applications. Massaranduba is the densest of the group at roughly 1,150 kg/m3 with a Janka around 3,190 lbf, and it delivers a deep uniform red that no other species matches. It also has the highest shrinkage of the group. On a fully exposed Northeast deck it checks and moves more than Ipe does, so it belongs on covered porches, under pergolas, or on north-facing exposures where the boards are not being cooked and soaked in alternation.

Jatoba, near 2,690 lbf, is superb wood that mostly belongs indoors. Its durability rating outdoors is moderate, not Class 1, and Northeast exposure finds that out quickly. Red Balau, running roughly 1,700 to 2,000 lbf depending on the specific species in the group, sits in a genuinely useful middle position. It works more easily than Ipe, takes fasteners with less fuss, and holds up well on residential decks that see normal foot traffic. Garapa, around 1,700 lbf, is the blond option. It runs noticeably cooler underfoot than the dark species in August, which matters on pool surrounds and on decks where children are barefoot, and it carries a Class 2 durability rating rather than Class 1.

Moisture content is the number that decides everything

Tropical decking installed in the Northeast should arrive and be fastened at 12 to 16 percent moisture content, and getting this wrong ruins more decks than species selection ever has. Decking is not flooring. A board dried to 6 or 8 percent for an interior application will sit outdoors, pull moisture back out of the Northeast air, swell across its width, and put crushing pressure on every fastener and every neighboring board. The result is buckling, plug pop and split ends.

The correct target is the equilibrium the boards will actually live at. Air-dried or properly conditioned tropical decking in that 12 to 16 percent band moves very little after installation. Gap spacing follows directly from where in that band the material sits at the moment of installation. Boards installed in a dry March at the low end of the range will swell, so the gap needs to be wider. Boards installed in a humid August at the high end have already expanded and will shrink, so the gap can be tighter. Crews who use one gap number year-round are guessing.

Acclimation on site is worth the time. Sticker the bundles off the ground, under cover, with airflow on all six faces, and give the pack a week or more before the first board is fastened. Skip that and you are installing a board whose dimensions are still changing.

Substructure, profile and fasteners

Dense tropical hardwood decking needs joists at 16 inches on center, and that spacing is a floor, not a target. Run the boards at 45 degrees and the spacing tightens to 12 inches. Anything wider than 16 inches invites deflection that the boards will telegraph within a couple of seasons. For estimating, a 5/4x6 board covers about 2.1 linear feet per square foot of deck surface, which is the quickest sanity check on a material takeoff. Frame design, connection detailing and guard requirements all sit under the American Wood Council codes and standards documents, and residential deck framing is enforced through the code your jurisdiction has adopted from the International Code Council.

Profile selection drives fastening. Shiplap profiles take visible fasteners, face screwed with pilot holes and countersinks, plugged if the client wants the fasteners to disappear. Tongue and groove is the only profile that works with hidden fastener systems, where clips engage the machined groove. Pick one and detail it fully before the material is milled, because switching mid-project means re-milling. Wherever the material runs vertically or as a porch ceiling, it goes on furring strips or joists, never directly on a solid substrate, and the grooves face down so water drains out rather than collecting in the channel.

Fasteners are where coastal Northeast projects fail. Use 316 stainless steel for anything within salt spray reach, which in practice means the entire Atlantic shoreline and any deck near a road that gets heavy winter salting. Lesser stainless grades will streak and eventually fail. Ventilation is the last piece. Air has to move under the deck. Solid skirting boxed tight to grade traps humidity against the underside of the boards, and cupping follows. Graying, finish and realistic maintenance

Every tropical hardwood deck in the Northeast will silver if left alone, and that is a cosmetic outcome rather than a durability failure. UV degrades the lignin at the surface, the color washes out, and the board arrives at a soft gray. The structure underneath is untouched. Clients who want the deep brown to persist need a penetrating oil finish containing UV absorbers, applied annually on exposed decks and every second year on covered ones. Film-forming finishes do not belong on dense tropical hardwood. The oils and the density fight adhesion, the film fails in patches, and stripping it off is miserable work.

Seal every field cut with an end-grain sealer before the board goes down. End grain absorbs water many times faster than face grain, and unsealed cuts are where checking starts. Clean the deck each spring with a wood cleaner and a stiff brush rather than a pressure washer, which erodes the softer earlywood and leaves a fuzzy surface that holds dirt.

One point of honesty that many suppliers skip. Solid unmodified wood carries no warranty, from J. Gibson McIlvain or from anyone else. Modified wood and cedar: when tropical hardwood is not the right call

Thermally modified and acetylated products solve a different set of problems than tropical hardwood, and on some Northeast projects they are the better specification. Thermory and Abodo Vulcan are both thermally modified, meaning the wood has been cooked in a controlled low-oxygen kiln until the hemicellulose that fungi feed on is chemically altered. The result is dimensionally stable, decay resistant, and lighter than any tropical species. Accoya takes a different route through acetylation and achieves similar stability. All three carry manufacturer warranties, which solid tropical hardwood cannot offer.

The tradeoff is length. Kiln size caps modified wood at roughly 16 feet, with the metric-run products landing just under that. If a deck design calls for continuous 20 foot boards with no butt joints, modified wood cannot deliver and Ipe can. Modified products are also softer than tropical hardwood, so they dent where Ipe would not.

Western Red Cedar remains the default standard in much of the Northeast, and it performs well when the right grade is specified. CVG, clear vertical grain, gives you a quartersawn face with no knots and the best dimensional stability cedar offers. STK, select tight knot, is a flat-grain product with sound knots, entirely appropriate where the knotty look is wanted and the budget is tighter. Cedar is light, easy to work, and cool underfoot. It will not match Ipe for hardness or service life under Northeast freeze-thaw, but calling it a bad deck board would be wrong.

Documentation, certification and legal sourcing

Every tropical decking shipment entering the United States carries a paper trail, and specifiers on institutional or LEED-tracked residential work need to know what that paper trail contains. Lacey Act declarations apply to imported wood products and require species and country of harvest. When using a CITES-listed species, additional export and import documentation is required and lead times extend accordingly, so it belongs in the project schedule rather than in a surprise phone call two weeks before delivery. The CITES Secretariat maintains the current appendices, and listings change.

Chain of custody certification is a separate question from legality. FSC certification tracks the material from forest to jobsite and is what LEED credits recognize through the US Green Building Council. J. On a project where the deck sits at grade in permanent shade under maples, spend the conversation on drainage and airflow before you spend it on species.
